How the kitchen timer works
- Tap a dish such as Pasta or Rice, or enter a name and your own minutes.
- Every timer gets its own card with the time left and a progress bar.
- Start as many timers as you need. They run at the same time and independently of each other.
- When a timer is done, its card turns red and an alarm sounds until you press Stop. Need a bit longer? Press +1 min.
The timers are saved in your browser. If you close the tab by mistake, open the page again and they are still running.
Typical cooking times
| Dish | Time | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Spaghetti | 9 to 11 minutes | Check the packet and taste a minute before the end. |
| White rice | 15 to 18 minutes | Then let it rest covered for 5 minutes. |
| Soft boiled egg | 6 minutes | Medium egg from the fridge, into boiling water. |
| Hard boiled egg | 10 minutes | Cool in cold water straight away. |
| Potatoes | 20 minutes | Medium pieces, from boiling. |
| Steak, medium | 3 to 4 minutes per side | 2 to 3 cm thick, very hot pan. |
| Frozen pizza | 10 to 14 minutes | Preheat the oven. |
| Cookies | 10 to 12 minutes | They firm up while cooling. |
Times vary with size, pot and stove, so treat them as a starting point. For eggs, our egg timer has a chart for every egg size.
Why use an online kitchen timer?
A digital kitchen timer on your phone or tablet is always at hand, shows several countdowns at once and never runs out of battery in the drawer. Place the device somewhere you can hear it and keep the volume up. While a timer is running you can switch to a recipe in another tab.
For a single countdown use the online timer or a fixed duration such as the 10 minute timer or the 20 minute timer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run several kitchen timers at once?
Yes. Every dish gets its own timer card. They all run at the same time and each one rings when its time is up.
Will the timer ring if I switch to another tab?
Yes. The timers keep running in the background as long as the page is open. Keep the volume up and the browser tab unmuted.
What happens if I close the page?
The timers are stored in your browser. When you open the page again they continue with the right time left. A timer that finished in the meantime rings as soon as you tap the page.
Can I pause or extend a timer?
Yes. Pause stops a timer, Resume continues it, and +1 min adds a minute, also after the alarm has started.
Is the kitchen timer free?
Yes, it is free, without signup or app, and works on phones, tablets and computers.
