Boiled egg chart
Times are for eggs straight from the fridge, lowered into water that is already at a rolling boil.
| Size | Soft boiled | Jammy | Hard boiled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 5 minutes | 7 minutes | 9 minutes |
| Medium | 6 minutes | 8 minutes | 10 minutes |
| Large | 7 minutes | 9 minutes | 11 minutes |
| Extra large | 8 minutes | 10 minutes | 12 minutes |
Eggs at room temperature need about one minute less. Simply adjust the time in the timer before you start.
How to boil eggs perfectly
- Bring enough water to the boil to cover the eggs completely.
- Lower the eggs gently into the boiling water with a spoon and start the timer straight away.
- Keep the water at a steady, gentle boil.
- When the alarm rings, move the eggs into cold or iced water. This stops the cooking and makes them easier to peel.
Tips against cracked eggs
- Eggs mostly crack because of the sudden temperature change. Let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes or prick the wide end carefully.
- A crowded pan makes eggs knock into each other. Use a bigger pan.
- At high altitude water boils below 100 °C, so allow a little more time.
Not only for eggs
The egg timer is a normal countdown, so you can change the time for pasta, rice or tea. For recipes with several steps, add more timers that run one after another. For tea, try the 4 minute timer.
Frequently asked questions
How long do you boil a soft boiled egg?

How long do you boil a hard boiled egg?
About ten minutes for a medium egg. Large eggs need one minute more, small eggs one minute less.
Should you put boiled eggs in cold water?
